Mavericks Growing & Developing Netball

Whilst many netballers were transfixed with the Commonwealth games through the summer the Mavericks Management Board were hard at work putting in place the framework for an ever improving Mavericks for this season.

For the first time, Mavericks has selected Development Squads in two age groups, years 7 & 8 and 9 & 10. This gives more access to players with potential for extra coaching by the Mavericks family of coaches whilst keeping them in their performance pathways locally. Mavericks now has more coaches in house than ever before numbering 12.

The Mavericks succession planning has started to bear fruit, with the promotion of Sam Bird from Head Mavericks Youth Coach to Superleague Head Coach along with a number of players following through the Mavericks pathway. For the first time ever, players have progressed from the Mavericks Development Squad into the Youth Squad. The Superleague Long Squad has several players from its Youth Squad challenging for top places.

Mavericks’ philosophy of developing coaches, players and umpires continues to be productive with an umpire from the East Region being involved in umpiring international matches this year again. Mavericks encourages a mentoring system at its training sessions for umpires. This partnership works well with umpires developing and players being umpired at a good level.

Maggie Jackson now heads the Mavericks Coaching Performance Group and is overseeing coaching at all four levels of Mavericks squads. Mavericks will be holding sessions through the season for any coaches, teachers or managers to attend and be mentored by Maggie Jackson.
